Psyence Fiction: 15 Years To Unkle Debut Album

Unkle debut album Psyence Fiction was a promising one from the lineup that it featured. Jason Newsted from Metallica, Thom Yorke from Radiohead, DJ Shadow as the producer, Ian Brown from the Stone Roses and Richard Ashcroft from The Verve. James Lavelle and DJ Shadow made a dark Electronica/Trip Hip album that was inspired from so many artists so I won't count it here... They mixed a lot of songs from different eras adding voices and lyrics of the artist above and together they made one of the most inspiring albums of this  genre. It was released 15 years ago, on 29th of September, 1998. So it's good time to remember some of its highlights

Goldfrapp

Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory, are active since 1999. They began their career together when they were over 30 and released a magnificent debut album named Felt Mountain, which was Trip Hop and Soft Electronic. Their second, Black Cherry, was more Electronic than Trip Hop and than they tried other directions such as EDM (Supernature, 2005) and Ambient/Downtempo (Seventh Tree, 2008). So when I started listening to what they are preparing, I could just guess that it would be different from the other releases so far. Seems I was right. Their new release is an Acoustic, Soft Electronic and Trip Hop album. I can categorise it between their debut album and Seventh Tree. And it's good as it sounds. I know it might disappoint some of the EDM fans but, there are a lot of beautiful songs, mainly named after persons. I think that Tales Of Us is going to be one of my favourites this winter. Emiliana Torrini

I fell in love with Emiliana Torrini's music, an Icelandic singer-songwriter, when I listened to her debut English album Love In The Times Of Science (1999). Her voice was perfectly fitting to the Trip-Hop rhythm of that album. Since then she became more close to Indie-Folk but still leaving her soft, partly-broken voice marks on some wonderful songs and covers. I was pretty excited to discover that she released a new album, her Sixth so far, which continues in some way the musical direction of her earlier 2008's release, Me And Armini. Those of you who love beautiful ballads and Acoustic Folk songs would love this new release. And for those of you who missed her so far, here are five reasons to go back and listen to her discography.

Roughberry - Glass Tree

From sunny California to the dark places of Trip-Hop in London, I found this band led by Sara Rioja. They are making dark yet communicative Trip Hop, which reminded me the spirit of Bristol in the previous Millennium.

Jonathan Atkins - Voices & Vices Volume I

After listenning to the latest release of Jonathan Atkins, a multi-instrumentalist from Mississauga, who produces bittersweet Folk music, I was amazed to discover he's unsigned (yet...). I hope that someone in the industry will hear him soon, because he might become a fine artist.

Red Nightfall - Late In The Fever

Red Nightfall are an Indie Rock quartet from Toronto who released their latest EP last week. I think it's awesome and tasteful as a good record should be made.

MagU - High Sugar Moons

Ending this tour in Buenos Aires, Argentina with MagU. I tried to find more information about her/them but it seems that they haven't published anything yet. This album is a mixture of Indie Folk and Dream Pop with acoustic atmosphere which make it perfect for sunny days and full moon nights

Stay Calm: 15 Years To Morcheeba's "Big Calm"

Morcheeba were formed in London by brothers Paul Godfrey and Ross Godfrey, who recruited leading singer Skye Edwards to establish a Trip-Hop Trio. After releasing their debut Who Can You Trust? which was dark Trip-Hop record, they slightly moved to a more Pop-Oriented albums, starting with Big Calm. Big Calm was released 15 years ago on 16 of March, 1998 and became the most successful album of Morcheeba so far. I still think that it had light Trip-Hop elements in it but in a more entertaining way. For that excellent album 15 anniversary, it's a great opportunity to go back and listen to five songs from that release.
